Phase 2 Bio-Reactor Map Bonita Springs City Council approved proceeding with the Environmental Protection Agency grant application process for the funding of phase 2 of the Felt’s Avenue Bioreactor Project. The EPA introduced the STAR Grant Program in October of 2019 in efforts to provide municipalities with funding for projects and emerging technologies that prevent or control the occurrence of harmful algal blooms. If approved by the EPA, the $400,000 grant would be used to procure the necessary materials to draw water from the Imperial River system into the Felt’s Avenue Bioreactor for treatment.

The city began preliminary testing on phase 1 of the Felt's Avenue Bioreactor in September 2019. The goal for phase one of this project was to capture nitrogen removal ratings data as a baseline for FDEP to review and approve a removal efficiency rating for the bioreactor systems to facilitate the achievement of clean water statewide.
