City Council members reviewed a pending agreement a pending agreement with The Florida Department of Emergency Management (FDEM) that would provide Hazard Mitigation Grant funds resulting from the impact of Hurricane Irma on the city of Bonita Springs in late 2017. On August 6, 2018, staff submitted a grant application for the Spring Creek/Bonita Springs Golf Course Flood Improvement Project and Logan Boulevard Floodway Improvement Project and received notice of project award for both on October 3, 2019. These projects would improve drainage in the Bonita Springs Golf Course, Palmira Golf Club, and Village Walk areas and reduce potential flooding in extreme weather situations. FEMA approved funding on August 23, 2019 and the City received the sub-recipient agreement on November 18, 2019.

The cost for the Spring Creek/Bonita Springs Golf Course Flood Improvement project is $9.9 million. The HMGP grant requires a 3:1 match, in which the City will receive HMGP funds in the amount of $7,425,500 and is required to match the remaining project cost of $2,475,000. The Logan Boulevard project costs is $2.35 million for improvements and also requires a 3:1 match in which the City will receive HMGP funds in the amount of $1,762,500 and is required to match the remaining project cost of $587,500. Both agreements are contingent on the commitment of the financial match by the City.

Council has approved moving forward with both projects.
